Assisi From Florence
This tour is directly related to the story of St. Francis, one of the two patron saints of Italy and among the most revered figure in the world.
Francis was born in 1182 into a wealthy merchant family but suddenly decided to divest himself of all his wealth and live in absolute poverty.
He founded the Franciscan Order and revolutionized the concept of monastic life, highlighting the importance of direct involvement in helping the most needy.
This tour includes the important places of the life and death of Francis. The Basilica of San Francesco, upper and lower, the crucifix that came to life and spoke to him, the garden of roses without thorns, the small cave where he died. Particular attention is paid to the basilica and its rich decoration. In fact the best artists of the 13 and 14 century (Giotto, Cimabue, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti) decorated the walls of two churches with stories of the life of the saint.

SIENA
After about 2 hours and 30 driving northwards, crossing and skirting the Tiber river valley, we will enter the Tuscan countryside and arrive in Siena for our first stop.

MONTERIGGIONI
Situated in the northern extremity of the municipality, Monteriggioni stands on top of a low hill whose slopes are dotted with olive trees and vines.
The castle was founded in the second decade of the 13th century by the Republic of Siena. Its main aim was to create a defensive outpost against its rival, Florence. For centuries the site carried out this function for which it was created, resisting countless sieges and attacks, one after the other. Its military function became less important in the second half of the 16th century, when the whole state of Siena, which the borgo was part of, was annexed to the state of Florence .
VOLTERRA
Volterra, a haven of Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Rennaissance art, dominates the Cecina Valley, 550 metres above sea level, affording a spectacular view as far as the sea.
The city still retains traces of its majestic past which gradually unfurls as you wander through the narrow streets and explore the Etruscan Museum, the Art Gallery and Museum of Sacred Art. And yet Volterra’s charm not only lies in its historical patrimony but in the undefiled surrounding countryside, a slow traditional way of life and its age-old tradition of alabaster carving.

Rome to Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio
This Day Trip to Orvieto and Civita Bagnoregio gives us the opportunity to see how Italians live in an ancient medieval hill-top town with almost four thousand years of history. Orvieto is in fact older than Rome!
Its world famous Cathedral is perhaps the most perfect church façade ever built. Inside you’ll see the reliquiario containing the Shrine of Corpus Christi, a miraculous Christian relic, and Signorelli’s fresco cycle which inspired Michelangelo when painting the Last Judgement in the Sisitine chapel.
You have time for browsing around the quaint alleys shopping for Orvieto’s famous ceramics, artisan jewellery and food stores.
After exploring this charming town with amazing views you will head to Civita Bagnoregio, known as the “ghost town”, accessible only by a foot bridge. The town is almost deserted.
Here you can stroll the narrow streets and marvel at the existence of a place where time stopped many centuries ago.
